Mary Lou MacDonald
17. Gryffindor. Muggleborn.
Mary MacDonald grew up in Shaw and Crompton, Greater Manchester in a four bedroom house with four older, soccer mad brothers, a twin ballerina sister, an overprotective, borderline OCD mum and an accountant father who loved the smell of their always freshly polished floorboards. All in all, her upbringing was pretty normal.
Then an owl swooped into their living room and her mother screeched at the bird droppings while her father ushered it out of the house with a broom. Her letter was found on the front lawn by the post man that morning who popped it into her letter box with no more than a nonchalant shrug. Mary didn't know owls delivered mail until she got to Hogwarts.
The first morning Mary saw the owls swoop into the Great Hall she ducked under the Gryffindor table, blushing furiously at the laughter of the older more knowledgeable students and only reemerging at the insistence of Lily Evans; another muggle-born.
The scared first year disappeared pretty quickly as she grew accustomed to living in two worlds: the 'normal' of home, and 'her' world. At home Mary was regular, just another MacDonald running around the local park kicking a soccer ball in a sweaty mess. At Hogwarts, she was the girl who always had a smart response to people's sass, without bullying them. She was the one that told boys to piss off when they were being twits, and stood for all things muggle as long as she didn't have to fight a pure-blood. She doesn't like Quidditch and has attempted to convert some of the Gryffindor players to football. She loves records and can't stand using the wireless wizarding network (she loves the comforting feel of 'home' by putting the needle on the track.)

Relationships
Mary has little interest in the social standings of Hogwarts; the purebloods, the rich kids, the socialites. To Mary, it's no different to the stigma's in the prep school she had been enrolled in before her letter came and she wanted no part of it, so naturally she surrounds herself with people just the same.
Lily Evans is Mary's best friend. Lily's easy to talk to, easy to be around. There's no drama, Mary doesn't have to roll her eyes at stupid comments and they can talk 'muggle rubbish' as Marlene McKinnon puts it. Though she never quite understood Lily's friendship with Severus Snape, she accepted it all the same.
Peter Pettigrew is one of Mary's best mates because he's harmlessly honest and completely oblivious to the things he's actually good at. She gets defensive of him and pretty cross with the other 'Marauders' when they put him down. For this reason, Mary finds Remus Lupin good quality too.
Emmeline Vance is another girl Mary likes, deeming her 'normal' and 'drama-free'.
Mary finds James Potter an arrogant hooligan, despite Lily's changing attitude towards him Mary has little time for the 'pureblood rich kids' and likes Marlene McKinnon even less. She thinks she's little more than a whore skimming off her looks, social standing and daddy's money. She doesn't think Dorcas Meadowes is right for Remus at all, by association with her friends and Sirius Black is a total skeeze. Hestia is a tomboy that can't decide if she likes one dick or two and the Prewett twins have no direction in life despite cracking the occasional half-witted funny prank.
It's easy to say Mary's courage is telling people how she feels about them honestly, rather than the brash, impulsive behaviour of so many of her housemates. Though most people on the outside would say to everyone that she isn't already friends with she's stand-offish and a rude through unintentional arrogance. While thinking the 'pureblood rich kids' are walking around like they're better, she's probably more representative of it herself, playing the 'muggleborn' victim at times.
